Men’s and women’s basketball started the winter season with a bang as they launched their opening competitions, the men playing Claremont Mudd-Scipps College on November 7 and the women traveling to Portland to play Lewis & Clark College on November 9.

The Pacific men’s team season opener was spoiled by Claremont Mudd Scripps from California in a 95-61 loss in Stoller Center. Pacific kept the game close, hitting three, three-pointers to stay 17-13 at the beginning of the first half. Unfortunately, the reigning SCIAC tournament champions Scripps were on a hot streak shooting 68.97 percent from the field, and had the Boxers trailing 55-29 at the half. The second half was more of the same where the Boxers were outscored in all phases, especially in the paint where they were outscored 44-16. Pacific’s leading scorer was Anthony Hrboka as he scored 13 points and grabbed two steals on the defensive side.

The Pacific women’s team opener started off with a win as they dominated Lewis & Clark College 71-48. Pacific controlled the game from the beginning as they outscored Lewis & Clark 21-9 in the first quarter. They kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter outsourcing again 18-8. The Boxers commanded the game on the inside, as they were able to put up 42 points in the paint compared to Lewis & Clark’s 18. Pacific also grabbed 57 rebounds compared to the Pioneers 41. Our Boxers also got after it in transition as they put together 11 points off of fastbreak opportunities. The leading scoring came from Sydney Esperanza as she put up 15 points and 10 rebounds for a season opening double-double.
