On March 3, Pacific University’s Sports Information Director announced his resignation from the position. Smith was hired in August 2020 for the position.

“I feel like I need to make some changes in my life,” said Smith in a statement posted to Twitter, adding, “which leads me to my decision to resign my position as SID [Sports Information Director]  at Pacific University.” During his time at Pacific, Smith helped upgrade Pacific’s livestream footage as well as started a Boxer Alumni podcast. The decision comes with all of Pacific sports in full swing. Due to COVID, all 24 Pacific sports are being played during the spring season.

Smith said, “I’m not sure what the future holds in store for me right now but I know God will lead me in the right direction.” The decision comes with all of Pacific sports in full swing. Due to COVID, all 24 Pacific sports are being played during the spring season. Due to little to no time to hire a new sports information director, Pacific will stay in-house and have a team effort from three employees for the position.

Savannah Cox the assistant volleyball coach will be managing the Boxer Athletics social media accounts and managing the Boxer Athletics website. Braden Ash, the assistant Golf coach will be managing press releases and statistics for all athletics and Mallory Hielfied, the intramurals director will be helping as well.

Cox said, “It is a stressful time since we have all 24 sports going on at the same time.” She added, “I have been in an SID role before, so I do feel confident in my abilities to manage it.” Cox is excited to promote Pacific through social media and the internet saying, “I think it is important for recruiting and see this as an advantage.” When asked about Mike Smith, Cox said, “He is an important part of our Pacific family but we support him in whatever decisions he needs to make.”

Although Smith was only a Boxer since the summer, he has already made some great improvements to Pacific’s social media and livestream presence. He has always been kind to the Pacific Index sitting down for multiple interviews in his stay and he will be deeply missed. — Joey Balleweg & Chandler Fleming
