“Rodrigo y Gabriella” features guitar duo

Very few artists are as mesmerizing to watch as they are to hear, but the guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriella manages to accomplish both. With musical depth, and an electric sensation that makes it quite difficult not to hop up from whatever you may be doing and burst into a full-fledged jig.

Indeed, I found myself doing just that through the course of the three times I played their self-titled album “Rodrigo y Gabriella” while writing this review. Like the energy in their live performances, their music is similarly infectious. Combine a flamenco style with a background in thrash metal, a stint of Busking in Ireland and you have one heck of a duo. The places their six albums can take the listener are beyond compare.

The track “Tamacun” starts us off, establishing the synchrony between lead and rhythm, heart and soul. With a playful melody, the two explore the dynamics and guitar percussion that are essential to be a successful guitar duo.

And this is only the warm-up.

As I moved through the tracks, it started to become clearer and clearer: this is not your typical flamenco. This is flamenco mating with heavy metal, twisted with classical and 80s ballad, all harmonizing into an offspring that looks grotesque, but sounds as if it were crafted by minds greater than human.

Those interested in recording will appreciate the studio work done to make this album sound right. When listening with a good pair of headphones or speakers, it is as though Rodrigo and Gabriella are in the room with me.

The sound imaging is second to none and for those that wish to have their own concerts in the privacy of their dorm, this is one album you cannot pass by. The duo works the listener seamlessly through nine tracks, paying homage to the greats of yesteryear with the best rendition of “Stairway to Heaven” I have heard of since Jimmy Page took to the pick more than 30 years ago.

As one comment on their YouTube page states, “They are so smooth it’s like musical silk is making love to my eardrums.”

Due to their revolutionary and inspiring take on an age-old music style, I commend Rodrigo y Gabriella for inviting listeners closer to the raw and heart-pounding style of music that is sure to turn more than a few heads toward the acoustic arena.

If you’re looking to break out of your musical comfort zone, Rodrigo y Gabriella have built a new musical movement, and yes, it is still recruiting.
