The Institute for Mexicans Abroad is offering financial help to students of Mexican Origin

Now available to Mexican and Mexican-origin students, is the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) Becas scholarship program. This program is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements and are enrolled in higher education, but it’s not just exclusive to Pacific. Students who are attending community colleges, adult education programs, and other universities are also encouraged to apply; and the application process is now open.

“The goal is to reduce financial barriers that prevent these students from continuing or completing their education,” explains Tania Pena, the Executive Assistant and Project Manager of Pacific’s Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA). The importance of higher education is well-known, but finding ways to overcome financial burdens can seem like a daunting task for students. It is that struggle that led the Government of Mexico to fund the scholarship through the IME. Pena explains that the program is partnered with U.S. educational institutions and nonprofit organizations in order to disperse the funds.

Along with aiding students financially, this scholarship also encourages students to engage in advocacy work by volunteering locally, getting involved with cultural programs, or taking on positions that support immigrant communities. “The focus is on uplifting and empowering communities through education and service,” Pena expresses. Ultimately, even once the scholarship money is spent, the program hopes that students will have learned ways to continue to be a support for and represent their communities.

For students who find scholarship applications to be intimidating, Pena even offers pieces of advice when completing the application. She suggests that students make their goals clear and explain in detail the involvement students have had in their communities. And, perhaps most important, Pena says, is “be authentic…”
