Alumnus, optometry professor passes away

College of Optometry Professor Dr. Emeritus Bill Preston passed away Monday, Jan. 17 at the age of 82 years old.

A memorial in his honor will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 at the United Church of Christ at 2032 College Way in Forest Grove.

Preston was a sophomore transfer at Pacific University in 1949. He left to serve in the Korean War where he gained the rank of sergeant. When he returned to Pacific, he earned his doctorate in optometry when he graduated in 1958.

After many years, Preston became a part-time clinical adviser for Pacific. He became full-time faculty for the College of Optometry in 1976.  He was a part of the Admissions Committee and also became the Forest Grove Clinic Director. He advised and lectured until his retirement in late 1990. Preston served as faculty for Pacific University’s Optometry school from 1976 until 1996.

Preston was known for his regular financial gifts to the College of Optometry and other university offerings.

Preston’s father, Daniel, also served as Pacific’s Dean for the School of Music and became the associate Professor of Music as well.
