Index Staff Playlist: Songs of Summer

The Index’s Emaleah Hursh Recommends her Favorite Summer Tracks

“Some” by Steve Lacy, “Mariella” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, and “She’s My Collar” by Gorillaz featuring Kali Uchis

As summer approaches and warmer weather sticks around, having good jams to listen to is critical. Some of my favorites for the hot weather are “Some” by Steve Lacy, “Mariella” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, and “She’s My Collar” by Gorillaz featuring Kali Uchis.

These songs feel like summer to me and I feel that they are perfect for listening to in the summer sun no matter the activity. These artists have steller music that is super catchy and all have a similar vibe and feel to them. Exploring their albums and discography will lead you to some bangers.

These artists are from a variety of genres. Artists like Steve Lacy and Kali Uchis fall in a similar category of R&B while Gorillaz falls into the alternative or dance genre. All of these artists have really cool albums Gorillaz released their first album in 2001 while Steve Lacy’s first album was released in 2019. These artists are different in many ways but complement each other when listening to them from one song to the next.

“Shes my Collar” starts out fast and abrupt with a beat that continues throughout the song. Gorillaz music varies from intense to slow which makes this group versatile. In contrast, “Mariella” starts off with an instrumental beginning that builds up to Leon Bridges’s vocals. “Some” by Steve Lacy also starts out with a calmer introduction, a simple beat allows for the harmonies to shine through, throughout this song. All of these songs carry different energy but all make me think of summer in the sun. — Emaleah Hursh
