Senior Angelina Dominguez talks about her final year of rowing

Angelina Dominguez is the lone senior this year for the Pacific rowing team. Dominguez has been a part of the program for three years now, and is in her last season of rowing.

“I was interested in trying out a new sport, and I had a couple of friends on the team,” said Dominguez. “The closeness of the team atmosphere drew me in and being on the water was a bonus, getting to enjoy the beauty of being on the lake.”

Rowing may not get as much attention as the other sports Pacific has to offer, but Dominguez explained what rowing is. “Rowing is an all body sport, where each team member matches their movements in time with giant oars to make a boat go as fast as possible, often with an additional teammate steering and making calls.”

Rowing is a physically demanding sport, as Dominguez described what it feels like. “It’s like doing continuous cleans for eight minutes straight,” she explained. Yikes. Any gym bro could tell you that’s hard.

Dominguez went on to talk about how the season has gone thus far. “Very well!” She said, “we have lots of new rowers so it has been great seeing them power through their races, as well as we have put out a very competitive V4+ boat (V4+ is a varsity 4 person sweep boat with a coxswain).”

Dominguez then revealed the goal for the season. “To put out the strongest boats we can, getting the chance to be as competitive as possible while getting our novices in shape for the years to come,” she verbalized. “Rowing is one of those sports that you absolutely have to build upon each skill learned while pushing yourself at every point to gain power and stamina.”

To end off, Dominguez reflected on her rowing career, cherishing all the memories she got to experience. “Throughout my four years on the team, I have come to cherish all my teammates,” said Dominguez, “particularly in our travels as we get to row on new waters and bond while traveling.”

While she enjoys her farewell tour, she is still locked in on the final races in the upcoming weeks for Boxer rowing. “I am preparing to be very competitive these next two weeks,” said Dominguez, “Looking up race plans, figure out what calls work best for my rowers.”

Rowing is gearing up for the Northwest Rowing Championships in Vancouver, Wash. Sunday on April 19, and end their season at the WIRA Championships the very next week.
