IM sports are ramping up this fall semester

Pacific Intramural sports are in full flow right now. The sand volleyball playoffs are coming up next week, and indoor soccer and flag football are starting this Sunday. Pickleball and indoor volleyball begin next week. It is a lot.

To pin down this tornado of activity, I spoke to Pacific alumni and Intramurals Director Hayden Huzefka. “We’ve had over 11 teams sign up this year,” he began, “which is an all-time high.” He added that Indoor soccer is also staying popular as always with over 100 participants signed up already, and probably more on the way.

For Huzefka, from the time the school year starts up to Thanksgiving, it’s really a mad dash to fit as much stuff into that window as possible. “Men’s and women’s soccer, football, and volleyball all use gym and field space,” said Huzefka. “That’s really hard when the sports that we’re trying to push also use gym and field space.”

Because of the space pinch, there aren’t any new intramural sports on the docket for fall semester, but Huzefka assures that spring semester is a different story. “The golden goose that I really want to get going is slow pitch softball,” exclaimed Huzefka. “I want to see people come out and hit some dingers”.

A one-man department, Huzefka relies on student volunteers—and even then, capacity is limited; they need to pick and choose where to allocate time and resources. For Huzefka, it’s all about quality over quantity. “If I only have four leagues going on, I want those four leagues to be performing to the best of their ability, rather than me having eight mediocre leagues,” he says. “I only want to put out A-plus products.”

There is still time to sign up for intramural for indoor volleyball, flag football, indoor soccer, and pickleball through the end of next week on imleagues.com.
