Jules Boykoff Explores Athlete Activists in Athletes and Activists

By: Ezri Thompson

For Jules Boykoff, sports have never been just about winning games. A professor of Politics and Government at Pacific University and a former professional soccer player, Boykoff has spent much of his career studying the relationship between sports, politics, and social movements. Rather than viewing sports as separate from society, Boykoff believes athletic competition often reflects larger issues happening in the world. That perspective helped inspire Athletes and Activists, his new book co-written with Alex C. Davis and Amira Rose Davis that highlights athletes who used their fame and influence to challenge injustice, break barriers, and create social change.

When people think about famous athletes, they often focus on champions, records, and highlight reels. However, Athletes and Activists tell a different story. Through the lives of 28 athletes, the authors show how sports can be a platform for raising awareness, resisting inequality, and inspiring action. The book is organized into four sections: Reveal, Resist, Reframe, and Reimagine, with each section representing a different form of athlete activism.

In the Reveal section, Jackie Robinson demonstrates how breaking barriers can create change. Robinson became the first Black player in modern Major League Baseball and challenged segregation during a time of widespread discrimination. The authors write that Robinson “graphically symbolized and personified the challenge to the vicious legacy and ideology of white supremacy in America.” His success on the field exposed racial injustice and opened opportunities for future generations of athletes.

The Resist section focuses on athletes who directly challenged unfair systems. One of the strongest examples is Billie Jean King, who fought for equal opportunities and respect for women in sports. Reflecting on her experiences, King stated, “Even if you’re not a born activist, life can damn sure make you one.” Her story shows how personal experiences with sex discrimination can inspire people to stand up and create change.

The Reframe section highlights athletes who expanded the role of activism in sports. LeBron James has used his platform to support social justice causes, invest in education, and advocate for his community. According to the book, James has “consistently lent his name and raised his voice for social justice.” His story demonstrates that athletes can use their influence far beyond the game itself.

Finally, the Reimagine section features Maya Moore, who took athlete activism in a different direction. At the height of her basketball career, Moore stepped away from the WNBA to focus on criminal justice reform. Explaining her decision, she said, “I get pretty worked up when I see injustice and I couldn’t pretend like I didn’t see this happening.” Her willingness to sacrifice a successful career shows how strongly she believed in creating meaningful change.

Through stories of courage, sacrifice, and determination, Athletes and Activists reminds readers that some of the most important victories happen far beyond the field, court, or track. By combining his experiences as both an athlete and a scholar, Boykoff helps readers understand that sports are not just entertainment. They can also be a powerful force for social change.

Readers interested in learning more about the book will have an opportunity to hear directly from its creators. Jules Boykoff, Alex C. Davis, Amia Rose Davis, and illustrator Martin French are scheduled to discuss Athletes and Activists at Powell’s City of Books in Portland on Sunday, November 22 at 7 pm.
