Pacific Student Sam Janes’ take on the Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers are off to a great start in the 2026-27 season. Despite losing to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Blazers still hold a 3-1 record and have been playing stellar basketball up to this point.
The main hype around Portland this year is their elite guard. It’s no secret that Damian Lillard, probably the franchise’s greatest player ever, came back to the team this year after a short stint in Milwaukee. The Blazers also signed former Grizzlies star Ja Morant, in what already looks to be a great move for Portland. The Blazers also have former third overall pick in the draft Scoot Henderson, and former NBA champion Jrue Holiday. Not to be overlooked though are star forward Deni Avdija, as well as Toumani Camara and big man Donovan Clingan.
There is some shakiness concerning the team’s future whereabouts, with new owner Tom Dundon demanding funding for a new stadium, or else he might take the Blazers elsewhere. That would be a major blow for the city’s only major pro sports franchise on the men’s side. The Moda Center is about 20 years old now, and despite being the blueprint for a lot of arenas to come, it now lacks the features or the space that a lot of other arenas have. Unfortunately for Portland, it’s going to be especially hard to pull money together to fund the building of a new stadium or the expansion of a new one.
Going to a Blazers definitely isn’t as much of a spectacle as it is going to a Seahawks or a Thorns game. With this year’s team though, you’re definitely going to see some exciting basketball this season especially if high-flyer and other star guard Shaedon Sharpe returns from injury at some point.
