The Index staff weighs in on the benefits of AI:
Ava Hlavacek, Sports Editor
Personally, I am not a fan of AI, and I try to use it as little as possible. My only exception is when I edit photos in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. With the use of AI, I can make small adjustments to the quality of photos, remove aspects I wish weren’t there, and airbrush the skin of my subject. Within this minimal aspect, I think AI is very beneficial and is a great tool to not change, but improve the quality of my work.
Ezri Thompson, staff writer
I don’t use AI too much but I do use it to help me with some notetaking and as some starting guidelines for certain assignments when I am stuck. I will also sometimes use it to help me with editing and grading works or tell me how it would perceive my writings. On an unserious note, I will also sometimes have it make me weird photos of animals doing human things for entertainment but I don’t use them or anything.
Xavier Walker, sports writer
AI saves me a lot of time with starting/overview information on topics I’m interested in learning about. AI definitely points me in the right direction on where to look for further information on topics.
Sam Janes, online editor
I personally use AI very sparingly. I used it this year for source collection for an assignment where I had to get 50 articles on a topic. Other than that though, I don’t see much point in using AI, I feel like it defeats the purpose of being a student.
Malia Nagatani Gibson, Managing Editor
Although I don’t use a lot of AI platforms, whenever I search things on Google now it gives me an AI overview. This helps save me time when I’m looking for a direct answer or solution to something, like when I burned my roommate’s cooking pan and had to find instructions on how to clean it.
Olivia Azzollini, Editor-in-Chief
I can’t lie: I definitely get sucked into those AI fruit videos on Tik Tok. For use in classes I will sometimes use it to help clarify an idea I have or get feedback on how I can implement a thought process into a piece of work. AI can be very useful but it is unethical in my opinion to use it further than a tool to help aid you in your pre-planning process.
