For the first time ever the Alpha Kappa Delta sorority, AKD, is hosting a concert immediately following their annual Date Auction and all funds raised will be donated to The Dougy Center.
“The Date Auction is an event that the sorority puts on each year in an effort to raise money for our charity, the Dougy Center,” said sophomore and AKD project lead Pali Kaloi Jordan. “At the event we have AKD members and other student volunteers promote and present the donated dates which students can then bid on and try to win.”
Many of the dates up for bid at this year’s Date Auction have been donated by local businesses and include outings such as a date night to a pizzeria in Beaverton complete with laser tag, mini golf and other restaurants and eateries in the local Forest Grove area.
The Date Auction will even cater to those indifferent to the Valentine’s Day vibe of the event and will include packages up for bid such as a puppy playdate and a “Treat Yo Self” day at a spa.
After Campus Wellness Coordinator, Kathleen Converse, voiced some concerns surrounding the Date Auction, AKD has made an effort to emphasize that they are not selling people at this event.
“We are not actually selling the students at this event, we are selling the dates,” said Jordan.
The Date Auction will take about an hour to complete and no tickets are required for the event.
Immediately following the Date Auction, the AKDs will host a concert, with help from the Activities and Cultural Events Board, featuring alternative band “Spun Honey” and reggae band “Roots Knight Productions.” Both of which have alumni ties to the school.
“It has been a goal of ours as a sorority to hold a concert for a while, it has just never really happened,” said senior and AKD concert project lead Kaela Jenkins. “The bands are doing this out of the kindness of their hearts… It’s another great way for us to raise money for an amazing charity.”
The concert will go from 9-11 p.m. and tickets are required. Students can get the tickets for free at the PIC up until the day of the event.
All proceeds from the night will be donated to the Dougy Center, an organization that helps children, teens and adults cope with the loss of loved ones.
Jordan and Jenkins both are hoping for a large turnout and are excited to be supporting the Dougy Center in the process.
The Date Auction and Concert will take place on Feb. 12 in the Dining Hall of the University Center from 8-11 p.m.
