Editorial: Pacific students advised to make use of campus resources for finals

In The Pacific Index office, we know just as well as any other student how stressful college life can be, especially when the holiday season rolls around, bringing finals along with it. Anxiousness to get back home, time consumption and stress over classes are some of the most important issues to be dealt with during this time of year.

Although at times it may be difficult to admit to yourself and others that you may need that extra hand in class, it will be well worth your time and efforts to swallow your pride. Your campus and faculty are designed perfectly to help you tackle all of these concerns.

One place where students can go if they need help with writing, math or science is the Tutoring and Learning Center, revamped and reopened to the Forest Grove campus just this year. The TLC is facilitated by peer tutors, which can make it far less daunting to approach and easier to connect with someone who could have once shared the same difficulties as you in their classes.

Furthermore, the hours for the TLC also extend into the weekend, so students have an opportunity to walk in even if they need help when school is not in session. Math and science tutors are available Sunday through Thursday, 7-9:30 p.m. as well as 1:30-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Writing tutors are available Sunday through Thursday from 12-3 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.

The TLC presents an opportunity for students to get one-on-one help, and professors are just as valuable of a resource. On such a small campus, faculty members can be very accessible. Make sure to verify what your professors’ office hours are or even schedule an appointment outside of the hours if necessary. Faculty is here to make your learning experience smoother and less stressful.

Sometimes stress can creep up on students from places outside of class. This is where the student counseling center can be of great help. Pacific’s student health insurance plan provides free counseling sessions by appointment so that students may speak with a counselor about whatever stress is occurring in their lives.

Although being away at school does not always present the most tranquil setting, the holidays are still meant to be a relaxing time. So to kick start that process, make the most of the services that Pacific University offers.
