Boxer club empowers student athletes

Boxer Club was initiated in 2006 and has been supporting Pacific University athletics ever since.
The club has donated thousands of dollars over the last six years, and plans to donate even more in the years to come.
There used to be a Boxer club in the 1980’s but it was shut down and a 20-year absence ensued.
Athletic Director Ken Schumann played an instrumental role in bringing Boxer Club back. He came in as the athletic director in 2004 and spent the last eight years diligently working to better equipment and facilities in the Stoller Center for students who participate in sports.
Schumann put the club together by getting in touch with a group of  alumnus who were involved in sports on campus while they were students.
Together they created the organization that funds some of the important things that make sports on campus possible.
Boxer Club has played a roll in coming up with funding new equipment for the football team, as well as supplies for other teams as well.
They are also partly responsible for the newly-installed scoreboards in the gym.
The club is comprised of a board of directors and other members that contribute thoughts and money deciding where the dollars are spent. There are nine directors in total.
“Anyone can join for as little as a $50 donation,” said Schumann.
Also those who do join can determine where a certain proportion of their donation goes.
For instance, a person who donates $250 can divide it up sending $50 dollars to the general pool for the club and $200 can go to football, soccer or any other sport for that matter.
Boxer Club also puts on events to support the cause for athletics.
During every home game the club puts together the halftime meal stands, as well as the beer garden. The money raised at these events goes into the sports department as well.
Allyson May is in charge of the club. She is a former cheerleader and graduated in 1985.
Boxer Club has plans to continue to raise money for athletics and has no plans of disappearing like it did in the past.
It is dedicating its cause to supporting our athletes.
