The women’s wrestling team started practice earlier this October, as they prepare to take on their first competition at Simon Frazier University. Led by Coach Severin Walsh, the women’s wrestling team looks to improve this year as a program, as they have put in hard work on and off mat.

Walsh was able to attend the Wrestling World Championships this year, in which he took much away from in order to better his team. “Being able to rub shoulders with the best competitors in the world was a once in a lifetime experience,” Walsh said.

One of the team’s biggest goals coming into the year is to gain the attention of other programs in the conference.

“We have all returners and their hard work is really showing. It has been a joy coaching them and their progress will make things much easier on us” Walsh said.

Although the team may be smaller than others, they are led by senior All-American Bailey Martinez who has high expectations.

“I’m very happy with our team this, and I expect to see a lot of growth from everyone.” said Martinez.

Martinez said she strives to be the best teammate she can be, all the while trying to improve her personal ranking as a wrestler.

“My goal last year, was to All American at nationals, which I was able to do, said Martinez. “My goal this year is to place higher nationally as well gaining the same All American recognition.”

The women’s wrestling team has its first meet Nov. 8 at the Stoller Center. The team will then begin its travel season.
