In early April, Pacific University women’s soccer became the first team in the state of Oregon to sign with Under Armour to be their sponsor.

The Boxer’s new head coach, Steve Lucas, said that he wanted to provide the team with a clean slate in every facet of the game including their sponsor.

Provided that Oregon is the birthplace of Nike, almost all the colleges and universities in Oregon are contracted with Nike, yet Lucas decided upon Under Armour because he felt that the opportunity to sign with Under Armour was ideal for his program.

Freshman Gabrielle Glaser said she is excited to experience the opportunity to have a sponsor because they have not had one before.

Freshman Emily Thompson said that the new sponsorship provides a lot of exciting opportunities for the program and she believes it might aid in recruiting athletes to play for Pacific. She said that she is used to Nike cleats but she is excited to feel how Under Armour cleats play on the field.

“We are all very excited about it and everything we do is going to be first class,” Lucas said.

Lucas mentioned that every time they are representing the school they must be in Under Armour gear head to toe including jerseys, shirts, cleats and everything in between.

“Coming from a bigger school [Boise State University] we had a deal with our sponsors, when I came here I didn’t see a reason why we didn’t have that here,” Lucas said.

Freshman Brook Smith said that the new equipment will take some time to get used to but she feels that the team will be able to adapt easily.

Her hope is that Under Armour will give them a testing period to wear different products and see how they play.

“I was really surprised but I am so excited that we have the opportunity to have Under Armour sponsor us,” Smith said.

The Boxers will break out their new uniforms at the start of the fall 2016 season.
