This year, the to-do list for preparing to leave campus is longer than usual, with the concern over a potential bed bug problem in the residence halls. In addition to preparing their residence hall for the winter break, students have been encouraged to take extra steps to prevent taking home bed bugs.
Before leaving campus for break:
- Close windows
- Take out garbage
- Defrost refrigerator
- Turn off all lights
- Throw out food that will spoil
- Turn off heaters
- Lock doors
- Unplug electronics
Upon arriving home:
- Put all clothes in dryer for 20 minutes on high heat
- Seal suitcase in a plastic bag
- Wash and dry the clothes you wore home on high heat
- Blast suitcase with a hairdryer or steamer before packing and unpacking
- Repeat upon return to campus
