Magic food, discount Timbers tickets and a date auction will all be happening during the week of March 16-20. The Alpha Kappa Delta sorority will be hosting multiple events to raise money for the Village Gardens a Janus Youth Program based in Portland, Ore.

Village Gardens is a program for youth in low income situations or need help getting back on their feet. The program enables organic farming as means to teach the youth life skills such as leadership, business, accounting, time management and conflict resolution.

People who are involved in Village Gardens will be working and learning the farming process by actually growing their own food. In turn they are able to sell the food that they produced at local markets such as the Portland State farmer’s market in the summers through a branch program called Food Works.

Food Works not only works with troubled youth through Village Gardens but also with volunteers as young as 14-years-old and interns who want to further their professional skills.

Those involved in this program who qualify will also be given 120-day transitional housing with other workers with access to aid and with limited supervision. People who come to this program are looking to better themselves and to be able to find stability in their lives.

The AKD sorority was first aware of the Janus Youth Programs because of an alumna. Every year the sorority chooses a charity based on the philanthropy of children. The youth program fit that category.

The week that will accrue the majority of the funds for the charity, also known as KD Khaos, will be the third week in March. Starting on Saturday 16, before and after the magician, Derek Hughes, performs in the Taylor Meade Auditorium members of the sorority will be selling food in the lobby.

Pizza Schmizza is supporting the charity by allowing a percentage of the proceeds from all students who buy a pizza on Monday, March 18. The Portland Timbers soccer team have also shown their support by allowing the sorority to sell 45 tickets at a discounted price with seating behind the goal in the Widmer Brothers Southern Front Stadium.

The last event on March 20 is a date auction. Ten dates have been lined up along with dinner packages that go with them. People will be able to bid on their favorite date or bid on the date who has the best dinner package.

All of the proceeds will go to the Janus Youth Program.
