Artist, students create art piece

Established installation artist Horatio Hung-Yan Law was chosen as the featured artist for October to conduct a workshop and produce a collaboration piece with selected art students.

Yan Law collaborated with students from four art classes to create an art installation title “Elephant, Home/Not Home.” The installation was featured in the Kathrin Cawein Gallery throughout October.

Senior Devon Hughessaid working with Yan Law helped him develop his own skills as an artist. He said Yan Law had a lot of really great tips and wise words.

Hughes said the classes decided on “elephant in the room” because they felt that they could relate to the term, dealing with the pressures of being away from home such as unfamiliarity, discomfort and wonder many students feel when leaving home and coming to college.

“Elephant, Home/Not Home” was composed of items the students said felt reminded them of home and the fact that they are no longer home.

“It was really fun to watch the transformation of the project and to see what ideas it began with and where it went after that,” said Hughes.

Working with a professional artist to collaborate on a display piece was a useful way for student artists to test their skills and get a taste of what it means to create big scale pieces.

“One thing I really took away from the experience is the whole idea of being okay with the random things that happen with art,” said Hughes.

Each month a new art exhibit is featured in the Kathrin Cawein Gallery in Scott Hall. Sean Healy is the featured artist for November.

A free artist reception will be held Nov. 6 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
